What are Amino Acids?

Amino acids are the ‘building blocks’ of life. They are the compounds that combine to make protein. When you consume protein, your digestive system breaks the protein into amino acids, which are then utilized by the body for various functions. Because the play such an important role, amino acids are involved in most chemical reactions within the body that help maintain normal body functioning.

List of Amino Acids?

Amino acids are divided into two categories, namely, essential and non-essential amino acids. Let’s know more about these in detail –

Essential Amino Acids (EAA) – The amino acids that cannot be produced by the body and thus, need to be obtain through foods and supplements are called essential amino acids. These include: histidine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, leucine, lysine and methionine.

Non-Essential Amino Acids – The amino acids which are synthesized by the human body are called non-essential amino acids. There are 11 of these that include: alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamine, tyrosine, glycine, ornithine, proline, serine and glutamic acid.

Non-Essential Amino Acids

Why do you need Amino Acids?

A balanced plate helps to ensure that you get enough of BCAA’s and EAA’s through your diet. If your diet isn’t able to provide enough of aminos then your body won’t be able to produce protein, which in turn may lead to loss of muscle mass and strength.

  • Aid muscle recovery and repair
